BTS takes over with self-love

Self-love is something we cannot easily swallow in our system and straight up embrace who we are. It is an everyday struggle that we have to put up with while fighting our other inner demons. It will even make you question yourself and your worth. It something you can’t just teach in schools or win by luck, but I believe it something that can be realised through songs from Love Yourself 結 'Answer', an album by one of the rising boy groups of this generation, BTS.

BTS (방탄소년단) is a kpop boy group consisting of 7 members: RM, Jin, Suga, JHope, Jimin, V and Suga. They debuted in 2013 and gained popularity through their songs ‘I Need U’, Dope and many more. But there is more to their songs that captures people to listen and look deeply to its lyrics. Each member went through a lot and that made them more involved to the process of song writing. Recently, they have released the repackaged album and completed the Love Yourself trilogy. It was released on August 24, 2018 by Bighit Entertainment and is available in 4 different versions: S, E, L, and F. This series aims to empower youth into self-love and break out from the hate they have for themselves.

Love Yourself 結 'Answer’ Album Art

Love Yourself 結 'Answer’ consists of 16 songs that focuses on uplifting self-happiness and contentment. It is an album with a variety of genres that showed each members’ musical abilities. It can go from Pop EDM to slow RnB vibes. The title track, IDOL, is an upbeat song accompanied by classical Korean instruments. I think it is a way for them to break out from prejudices and hate thrown at them for sounding “westernized”. The music video garnered 40+ million views on YouTube which beat out Taylor Swift’s view record for Look What You Made Me Do Music Video. To be honest, as a fan of them for years now, it was quite flamboyant and colorful for my taste. It was not exactly my cup of tea. But on a good note, I enjoyed the album's side tracks. From Euphoria a song about happiness down to the last track which is Answer: Love Myself.

My personal favorite among the 16 songs would be Trivia 轉: Seesaw, sung by the group's lead rapper, Suga. The song has these chill vibes and lyrics that metaphorically uses seesaw as the medium of balance between a relationship. It was like both parties are now tired of playing up and down on each end and they're just waiting for one of them to give up, let go and think about themselves first. It is something that can be applied when you're holding onto something that isn't really for you—may it be love or career.

I am proud of BTS for they have influenced and touched thousand of lives through their music and existence. Aside from this self-embracing album, BTS also collaborates with UNICEF a month and a half after their release of the first part of the trilogy for a campaign against violence all over the world. Let's make the world a beautiful place and it starts with you. Love yourself.
